Vuelta a Espana - Stage 14: San Vicente de la Barquer - Oviedo, 188km

Salvatore Puccio put in a battling display on stage 14 of the Vuelta a Espana only to see his breakaway caught in the closing kilometres as Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) won a reduced bunch sprint.

Puccio had been part of the break that escaped shortly after the flag drop, but with the sprinters' teams eyeing a stage victory, they were never allowed to gain a significant advantage and were caught with less than five kilometres remaining.

The stage then looked as though it would end in a bunch sprint, only for a large crash to disrupt the bunch in the final kilometre, with Owain Doull unfortunately caught up in the incident, which allowed Bennett to ease to victory.

Despite the high speed of the crash, Doull was able to get back on his bike and finish the stage after treatment on the roadside for mild skin loss around the hip, knee and elbow and will be monitored by the medical team.

Salvatore Puccio

“In the beginning we just played the same game as the peloton, we went slowly and then at the end we pushed full gas and tried to stop them coming back.

“It was good to try and get it the breakaway, we’ve seen in previous years at the Vuelta that on the easier days with less climbing, the breakaway can sometimes beat the sprinters and get a stage win.

"When the end came it was with 5km to go and even though we were going very fast we were caught. We’ll have another chance next week.”
