Vuelta a Espana – Stage 12: Circuito de Navarra – Bilbao, 171.4km

Despite numerous attempts during a hotly contested 12th stage Team INEOS were unable to make the key breakaway at the Vuelta a Espana.

Tao Geoghegan Hart showed good legs to finish in a select GC group, featuring continued race leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).

Attention now turns to the more selective stage 13 which features the Alto de los Machucos summit finish and another great chance for a breakaway success.

Thursday’s test got off to a rapid start, with no break forming for the first 100 kilometres of racing. Team INEOS repeatedly looked to put riders into moves as the peloton continually split and regrouped. Eventually 19 riders slipped clear, contesting the trio of late climbs and the stage win in Bilbao.

Philippe Gilbert (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) pushed clear over the top of the final climb and maintained his advantage to the finish, with the GC group coming home a little over three minutes later.
