Tour of Britain stage one: Glasgow - Kirkcudbright, 201.5km

Ben Swift finished fifth as the opening stage of the Tour of Britain finished with a bunch sprint which was won by Dylan Gronenewegen (Jumbo-Visma)

Swift battled to his third top 10 in his last four race days in a tight finish which saw the in-form Groenewegen prevail after Jumbo-Visma paced the peloton back to the breakaway, which was caught with seven kilometres remaining.

Swift is now eighth overall, with time bonuses which were available for the breakaway placing the escapees above him on GC.

I think I got a bit keen in the finish and went a bit early when I should have stayed on Gronewegen’s wheel and then gone, but when you see the line, you’ve got to give it a go!"

"
It was quite a nice opening stage to be honest. The weather was good, the scenery was nice, there were a few rough roads at times - a few bone breakers - but in general it was a pretty good day.

"Obviously we’ve not got a leadout train here or the fastest of sprinters, but we gave it a good go and I think we can be happy with our work today. We knew it was quite a technical finish, downhill and twisty, and there was a bit of gravel too which wasn’t ideal, but it was all about just trying to pick wheels.
