Giro d'Italia - Stage one: Bologna - Madonna di San Luca (ITT), 8km

Tao Geoghegan Hart got his Giro d’Italia off to a strong start with the seventh fastest time in the opening time trial.

The young Brit clocked a time of 13 minutes and 29 seconds, digging deep on an eight-kilometre test which featured a tough final climb to San Luca.

With the forecasted threat of rain later in the day, a number of general classification favourites opted to start early, with Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) setting an unbeatable early benchmark.

Geoghegan Hart sits 35 seconds back on the Slovenian, with Pavel Sivakov the next Team INEOS rider home in 28th, 1:01 off the pink jersey.

- Tao Geoghegan Hart

“I felt super good until the last 500 metres and I paid a little bit there – I was going backwards. I think you’ll hear a lot of people say that today. Why not go big and give it a try?

“It was hard to pace but equally you’re always going to try harder on the steeper bits. I felt so so good and then all of a sudden the devil came and hit me with a big hammer! I felt good which is the main thing, I was maybe a little bit too keen on the first part of the second steep bit.”
