Race Torquay, 133km

A late solo attack from Pavel Sivakov enlivened the final lap of the inaugural Race Torquay.

Fresh off winning the Young Rider jersey at Tour Down Under, Sivakov was on the move again, pushing clear on the 10th and final lap.

With the sprinters’ teams looming large, Sivakov was able to open out a small gap before being reeled in. Owain Doull was alert to jump on a counter-attack, but in the end there was no stopping the inevitable bunch sprint.

Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) picked up the victory, edging out Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT Pro Cycling).

With the team riding 120 kilometres of training ahead of the Thursday evening event, attention now turns to Sunday’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
