The Belarusian unleashed a long-range sprint in Merzig but was eventually overhauled after a crash-marred sprint. Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Merida) edged out the win and with it moved into the overall lead of the race with one day to go.
Team Sky had taken it up on the run-in, arriving at the front with numbers as Luke Rowe dug deep to haul back the day’s breakaway. On the final climb of the day it was Geraint Thomas who set a tough tempo, thinning out the group
Sebastian Henao finished on the same time as the day’s victor and remains Team Sky’s best placed rider overall sitting 16th, 28 seconds back, ahead of the final day.
