Kristoffer Halvorsen sprinted to second place at Handzame Classic to register his first podium in Team Sky colours.

The Norwegian lined up as defending champion at the Belgian semi-Classic and narrowly missed out on a repeat victory.

As predicted the action came down to a bunch sprint on the Handzamestraat. Halvorsen sprinted down the left hand side of the road, with victor Alvaro Jose Hodeg (Quick-Step Floors) sprinting to the right as the pair split third-placed Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Team Sky hit the front in the closing stages, with Christian Knees and Jon Dibben patrolling the front to keep the pace high. Michal Golas put in a strong turn, before Chris Lawless dropped Halvorsen in a great position ahead of the flamme rouge.

Final standings:

1. Alvaro Jose Hodeg (Quick-Step Floors)
2. Kristoffer Halvorsen (Team Sky) s.t.
3. Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe)
4. Matteo Pelucchi (Bora-Hansgrohe)
5. Adam Blythe (Aqua Blue Sport)
