Vuelta a Espana – Stage 16: Pravia – Alto de La Cubilla, 144.4km

Tao Geoghegan Hart put in a valiant breakaway performance for the second day in succession at the Vuelta, finishing second on stage 16.

The Brit accelerated clear of an elite group of rivals on the Alto de La Cubilla summit finish, heading off in pursuit of lone leader Jakob Fuglsang (Astana). The Team INEOS rider came home 22 seconds back in the mist, after back to back days off the front in the high mountains.

Geoghegan Hart was able to ride his way into the move on the opening climb of the day – the Puerto de San Lorenzo – as a group of 21 riders eventually came together. The peloton were happy to see the move go clear, with race leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) again content to mark his rivals on the final climb.

David de la Cruz also showed improving legs heading into the second rest day as he finished in the second group of GC contenders.
