Egan Bernal powered to an impressive victory on the stage three hill climb time trial at the Tour de Romandie.

The Colombian clocked an unbeatable marker of 25 minutes and 10 seconds on the constant uphill drag to Villars, taking his first WorldTour win by four seconds to climb into second place overall.
Only three riders were able to finish within a minute of Bernal, who got quicker across the 9.9-kilometre course, overhauling the time of Richie Porte (BMC Racing), before holding off race leader Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo).
He now sits just six seconds off Roglic’s yellow jersey ahead of the race’s queen stage on Saturday, while simultaneously tightening his grip on the young rider’s jersey.
Jonathan Castroviejo was the next Team Sky rider home, clocking the 16th fastest time on his birthday. The stage played a key role in the general classification, with Castroviejo, Diego Rosa and Geraint Thomas all sliding out of the top 10 on the day.
After the stage Sport Director Dario Cioni was full of praise for the performance of Bernal.

He told "Egan is just showing how talented he is. We thought that he could be one of the surprises of the day and happily we were proved right.

"We had targeted a pace for the ride, and we knew that inside the final three kilometres it was pretty tough. We knew we didn't want to go too early and end up suffering there. But once Egan hit that point and felt good he was able to really open up. You could see that a lot of the guys who went hard at the first intermediate ended up fading.

"It's a bit of a shame to have come so close to the lead today, but there's plenty of work to be done and we believe we can win the race. Roglic is a very solid rider and he's obviously coming off a win in the Basque Country. He also has Kruijswijk up there as a team-mate who was really strong again today. So it will be an interesting stage tomorrow."
