Tour of California – Stage six: Ontario – Mount Baldy, 127.5km

Gianni Moscon dug deep on the slopes of Mount Baldy but was unable to remain in the top 10 overall in California.

The Italian was moved into position on the first category climb by his teammates but started to be distanced with 4.5 kilometres to go. Owain Doull spent the day in the breakaway, with the Welshman’s presence in the group of nine ensuring Team INEOS were able to sit in the bunch behind, conserving energy ahead of the tough final climb.

The stage win came down to a two-man duel, with Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates) edging out fellow young talent Sergio Higuita (EF Education First) to move into the overall lead. Moscon came home 23rd on the day and now sits 16th overall following a battling ride, which came two days after he went down in a late crash.
